Why Balinese Cooking Class Became One of My Favorite Experiences in Bali
Looking for unique things to do in Bali beyond beaches and waterfalls? Joining a Balinese cooking class became one of the most enjoyable cultural experiences during my trip that deserves a spot on your itinerary. We joined an afternoon cooking class expecting a simple food activity to fill a few hours. Instead, it became one of the most enjoyable and surprisingly memorable parts of the holiday.
It was relaxing, cultural, interactive, and honestly a nice break from the usual sightseeing schedule
an exciting afternoon
We joined the afternoon session, which lasts around 4–5 hours, and the best part was enjoying all the dishes we cooked together afterward.
Unlike the morning class, the afternoon option skips the traditional market visit and focuses directly on the cooking experience itself. Personally, I actually enjoyed this because the pace felt very relaxed. No early wake-up call, no rushing around in the morning, and it fit perfectly after spending the first half of the day in Ubud Art Market & Monkey Forest.
However, if you choose the morning class, it also include a visit to a traditional local market before the session begins. This option usually takes around 5–6 hours and gives guests a chance to see how locals shop for fresh vegetables, herbs, spices, meat, flowers, and ingredients used in everyday Balinese cooking.
For you that who enjoy cultural experiences, the morning class is definitely worth considering.
Learning Balinese Spices While Cooking Traditional Dishes
One thing that surprised me was how much preparation actually goes into Balinese cooking.
Before making the dishes themselves, we first learned about the herbs and spices used in many traditional recipes. There were fresh chilies, garlic, shallots, ginger, turmeric, galangal, lemongrass, and local herbs all being mixed together by hand. The smell alone already felt like stepping into a real Balinese kitchen. Even for guests who are not particularly interested in cooking, learning about the ingredients becomes surprisingly interesting because you start recognizing the same flavors used across many Balinese dishes around the island.
What I also did not expect was how much food we actually prepared during the session. Instead of cooking only one or two dishes, the class included around 6–7 different side dishes and traditional Balinese recipes. By the end of the class, the table was completely full of food. And honestly, it felt less like a cooking lesson and more like preparing a full Balinese feast together.
A Different Way to Experience Bali
What I expected to be just another activity in Bali ended up becoming one of the highlights of the trip. Spending a few hours learning local recipes, preparing traditional dishes, and enjoying the food together afterward felt surprisingly personal and rewarding.
It was also a nice reminder that experiencing Bali is not always about rushing between attractions. Sometimes, the slower moments , cooking in an open-air kitchen, learning about local spices, and sharing a meal together, become the most memorable parts of the journey, not forget to mention the friendliness from the local Balinese people we met during the class.
If you are currently planning your Bali holiday and looking for something cultural, enjoyable, and easy to fit into your itinerary, a Balinese cooking class is definitely worth considering. Whether you choose the afternoon session or the morning class with the traditional market visit, it is one of those experiences that stays with you long after the trip ends.
